About cracks in concrete surfaces

Cracks arise for a variety of reasons. Here are some reasons you may have cracks in your concrete patio:

  • Improper installation
  • Problems with the concrete mix
  • Freeze/thaw damage
  • Soil poorly compacted before the concrete installation
  • Roots from a nearby tree

At SUNDEK of East Tennessee, in addition to resurfacing concrete, we also repair it. We can resolve the cracks (or any other damage) and refinish the surface so you won't even be able to tell the damage was there. We'll also analyze the damage so you can prevent it from occurring again.

About uneven concrete surfaces

Even if your concrete patio isn't level, SUNDEK of Charlotte can resurface it. Our installers will apply a thicker coating wherever needed to make the surface even. In the end, you'll have a patio without trip hazards or spots where water puddles, making it a safer surface that's less prone to damage.

Frequently asked questions

Concrete resurfacing begins with an existing concrete surface. After preparing the surface, we apply a concrete overlay (also called a concrete coating) to the existing concrete.  See some of the color, texture, and masonry effect options.

A concrete overlay will last for many years when it’s correctly applied and protected by a sealer, even if there’s heavy foot traffic. By keeping up with cleaning and maintenance and reapplying sealer, you can keep your patio looking fresh longer.

Concrete resurfacing costs are less than what you’d spend to rip out and replace your patio. It’s also less messy and time-consuming. SUNDEK of East Tennessee can resurface a patio in just a few days. Costs vary by region and the current state of your concrete patio. We can provide you with a customized quote based on a price per square foot.

Yes, SUNDEK of East Tennesse can apply a concrete coating over a stamped concrete surface. Additionally, we can create a stamped concrete overlay over any existing concrete surface.

Why resurfacing is better than installing pavers over your concrete surface.

Pavers can quickly become uneven, causing tripping hazards and spots for water to puddle and weeds to grow through. Also, hiring a professional to lay pavers is expensive.

If you like the look of pavers, we can create that look. We can mimic the look of bricks, wood, flagstone, slate, brick, granite, and more. We can also seal the surface for protection from stains and UV damage.

Why resurfacing is better than painting your concrete surface.

Painting your concrete surface is no simple task. Concrete is porous, so paint tends to peel. Using water-based stains, concrete dyes, or tinted sealers is possible, but some color variation is likely to occur.

SUNDEK of East Tennessee can apply a concrete coating to your existing surface with color already mixed in. We have a variety of colors to choose from. We can also seal the surface for protection from stains, UV damage, and other elements.

Installation of a SUNDEK patio coating

Here’s an overview of the installation process (details vary depending on the products used):

  • Prepare & Repair. Etch, grind, or shot blast the concrete surface to make it porous. Fix cracks or other existing damage.
  • Clean & Prime. Pressure wash and let surface thoroughly dry. Apply primer if necessary.
  • Mix Product. Following instructions, mix the product to prepare it for application. Mix in color if necessary.
  • Apply overlay. Depending on the desired look, apply the overlay by spraying, rolling, or troweling.
  • Add Patterns & Texture. Using hand-trowels, rakes, stamps, and other specialty tools allows us to vary the surface.
  • Cure & Seal. After the overlay cures, add a sealer for additional protection. Customers often ask us if a concrete patio needs to be sealed, and our answer is always yes. A sealer will preserve the look of your patio for longer. It also enhances its stain resistance and makes it easier to maintain. Read more about why you should seal your concrete patio.

Resurfacing a concrete surface is not easy. SUNDEK of Charlotte can do it for you.

Do I have to rip out my existing concrete patio?

No. The beauty of resurfacing is that we can apply a coating to the top of your existing surface. We then customize that coating to give it a look you love. Resurfacing saves you the hassle and mess of having to demolish your existing concrete and start from scratch—it’s also less expensive!

How much does it cost to resurface concrete?

What if my patio is cracked or has other damage?

Not a problem! At SUNDEK of East Tennessee, we’re experts in concrete repair. We can repair cracks, spalling, flaking, fading, and other types of damage to your concrete. If your surface is uneven, we can even resolve that. We’ll analyze the damage and determine how to prevent it from happening again on your newly resurfaced patio.

Are decorative coatings slippery?

One of our priorities is to make sure your surface is safe to walk on. At SUNDEK of East Tennessee, we formulate our products to make them slip-resistant. We also texture our surfaces in a way that prevents them from getting slick when wet.

Maintenance

The best way to lengthen the lifespan of your patio is to invest in a sealer. Keep in mind that even high-quality sealers need to be reapplied (reapplying a sealer is less expensive than having to get your patio resurfaced again). Give us a call about how often you'll need to reseal your surface.

Aside from applying a sealer, maintenance includes using an ordinary broom or mop to remove dust, grass clippings, or other debris every few weeks. You can spray off the surface with a hose to resolve any dirty spots. If you live in a location with harsh winter weather, it's essential to protect your patio during freezing temperatures.

Although several of our top coatings are chemical and moisture resistant, we recommend that you clean chemical spills as quickly as possible. For stubborn spots, use a non-abrasive commercial cleaner formulated for the surface. You can also use a pressure washer if necessary.
